Welcome to The Stag & Hounds
A much-loved village pub in Burrough on the Hill, with a proud history and a wonderful setting beside the Parish Brewery, The Stag & Hounds has long been part of the local community. Now, as the sister pub of The Berkeley Arms in Wymondham, a new chapter is beginning.
We’re lovingly refurbishing the pub while keeping the character and charm that made it special in the first place. Expect proper food, well-kept ales, a warm welcome and a relaxed atmosphere — whether you’re joining us for a pint at the bar, a family meal, a catch-up with friends or simply popping in after a country walk.
Just like The Berkeley Arms, our philosophy is simple: a great village pub should be for everyone, not just a few.
02 — Parish Brewery & The Stag & Hounds
The strongest beer in the world was brewed next door
Founded by Baz Parish in 1983, Parish Brewery has been producing traditional, award-winning cask ales for more than 40 years — today from its historic 400-year-old building here in Burrough on the Hill, right beside the pub.
As The Stag & Hounds begins its next chapter, this special relationship will remain firmly at its heart. Parish Brewery beers will continue to have a proud place behind our bar.
We also plan to offer brewery experiences beginning and ending at The Stag & Hounds — a chance to see how these celebrated beers are made before returning to the pub for a well-earned pint.

03 — A pub steeped in history
These walls have witnessed rather more than village life
The king who was barred?
Edward, Prince of Wales met Wallis Simpson at nearby Burrough Court around 1930. Village legend says he was later barred from this pub. No record confirms it — which is rather the charm of it.

Myles & Pam
In January 1944, a newly married Captain Myles Henry and his wife Pamela made their first home in a room upstairs. He was killed at Arnhem that September, aged 23. Their story is framed inside the pub.

04 — Our story, continued
Continuing the story
For a period the pub traded as Grant’s Free House. In 2019 it returned to its historic name, reconnecting the pub with its roots. We warmly invite you to become part of its next chapter.
05 — Discover Burrough on the Hill
Walk the hill. Discover the history. Enjoy the view. Then join us at the pub.
Burrough Hill rises to 210 metres and is crowned by one of Leicestershire’s best-preserved Iron Age hillforts, its banks and ramparts standing above the landscape for more than 2,000 years. A shorter circuit around the hillfort runs about 1.2 miles; the park adjoins the 100-mile Leicestershire Round.
Some paths are uneven and can become muddy, so walking boots are recommended. After exploring the hill, you and your dog will be equally welcome here.
